COVID-19, Trauma and Domestic Violence

by Dr. Mary Ann Markey

Several factors are currently contributing to the increase in the number of cases of intra-family homicide, violence, aggression and domestic violence, such as the COVID-19 restrictions implemented by public policy: social distancing and home isolation, travel restrictions and disrupted holiday traditions. Even families who have close relationships can experience higher levels of stress due to external sources when home schooling becomes the norm, extra-curricular activities and sports are suspended, and in-person contact which typically includes hugs and kisses has become prohibited. In effect, routines that were familiar and welcome, particularly during the holiday season have become impossible to maintain. Additionally, the high expectations that are often set up by the media as well as commercial advertising and marketing can often lead to a major disappointment when celebrations fall short of the perfect holiday, credit cards are maxed to the limit, and people are plagued with payments for months into the following year. Families who have experienced intra-family crises involving homicide, violence, aggression and domestic violence are especially vulnerable during times of instability and uncertainty which can be further exacerbated if someone has been identified as having PTSD. Note that PTSD can result from other traumatic experiences in addition to serving in a combat arena; this disorder can also result from physical, emotional and psychological abuse from an intimate partner or a family member. Attending group or social functions amid large crowds of people with voices raised, loud noises, and no clear path for making a quick exit to freedom when the fight-or-flight reflex kicks in can be a recipe for disaster. However, PTSD survivors often display the symptom of hypervigilance which makes it difficult or downright impossible for them to relax enough to enjoy the company of others
