The Teddy Bear Project: Social Media Groups Sharing an Interest in Music
Social media can serve as a 24/7 accessible platform for gathering information, as well as for learning how-to master a language, new skill, etc. Locating groups who share similar interests and goals in addition to being willing to educate others who need some assistance is evidence of the caring and generosity of others. Personal experience has indicated that there are a significant number of individuals who would love to learn to play a musical instrument yet are hesitant because they feel that they waited too long, are too old, not smart enough, cannot read music, and the litany of doubts goes on . . . However, if the members of these social media groups provides them with encouragement and some practical suggestions regarding the potential for online or in-person instruction, sources for used or new instruments, the availability of bands, orchestras, choirs, choruses, etc., it will generate some motivation to take the next step.
There is a cautionary caveat though, since not all members of these social media groups may be equally as empathic and resourceful with their comments which may result in being more discouraging than encouraging to new group members. So, my suggestion would be to ignore such nay-sayers, and if their comments really become bothersome or downright intimidating, leave that group and seek out a new one because the reality is simply this according to my paraphrasing of a scene from the film, “Sister Act”: If, when you wake up in the morning, all you can think about is music whether it is playing an instrument or singing, THAT is what should be doing” no matter what anyone may tell you. By all means, go follow your dreams . . .
